The Unseen Battles

The Cold Between and Within

He sat in the parked car and watched the church doors. He had driven there, gone inside and almost immediately stepped back out to help his child with personal care. The practical task was finished. The harder task remained.

The building had felt cold. Not weather cold. It was the kind of cold a room can produce when it is full of familiar people and a person still cannot find a safe place to stand.

The Car as Sanctuary

The car became a small sanctuary. Nobody was watching. Nobody was asking for an explanation. He could sit between arriving and returning, with one hand still resting on the steering wheel as if the journey had not quite decided whether it was over.

He wondered if he should go back in. Too much attention would make him a story. No attention would make him question whether he had ever belonged. Both possibilities felt heavier than remaining in the car.

He also wondered whether exhaustion was distorting the room. Care had taught him to keep scanning, adjusting and making space for his child. It was possible to become so practised at reading every environment that the body continued reading long after the useful information had arrived.

He did not diagnose himself from a car park. He simply allowed for the possibility that tiredness and loneliness could exist together, each making the other more convincing.

On the Skin

He had often described conversation as something kept on the skin. Details could move safely across the surface: routines, appointments, systems, weather and the latest reasonable failure of an unreasonable process. The deeper layer was harder. Good intentions did not automatically create understanding.

Perhaps the people inside were willing but did not know how to meet him where the day had left him. That thought was kinder than blame, but it did not make the room warmer.

Not Today

He stayed in the car a little longer. The decision was not dramatic. He was not abandoning faith, community or the building. He was admitting that sometimes a person reaches the door and has no energy left for the performance of arriving.

The engine started. The church remained where it was. Another day might feel different. This one belonged to the quiet inside the car.
