Opening note

The official record is never the whole story.

These pieces live in the small space between what life asks and what people can actually arrange.

They are about care, bus rides, school meals prepared after midnight, flat-pack furniture, church debates, job portals, dusty football grounds and the quiet negotiations that rarely make the official record. Some began as blog posts. For this edition they have been reordered, edited and anonymised. Private messages have been paraphrased. The facts matter. So does the pressure between them.

About the author

Lwazi Sibanda writes about the parts of ordinary life that rarely receive a headline.

His attention stays with the small negotiation behind a routine, the paperwork inside a family decision, the comic machinery of work and care, and the moment when a reasonable system meets a human being. The result is observant, intimate and often dryly funny, with room for tenderness and fatigue.
